Grammar focus
a / an + job
Use a or an before a singular job or noun, choosing between them by the following sound.
a/an and the
Choose between a/an (first mention, one of many) and the (known, specific).
Adverbs of frequency
Use adverbs of frequency and place them correctly in the sentence.
Asking questions in English
Form common A1 questions correctly with be, do/does and question words, using the right word order.
can / can't (ability)
Use can and can't to talk about ability.
can for possibility and permission
Use can to talk about what is possible and what is allowed.
Countable and uncountable nouns
Tell countable nouns (an apple, apples) from uncountable nouns (rice, water) and use a/an, some and plurals correctly.
Describing people, places and things
Describe people, homes and places using there is/there are, have got, prepositions of place and this/that.
have got / have (possession)
Use have got and have to talk about family, possessions and relationships.
How much...? / How many...?
Ask about quantity with How much (uncountable) and How many (countable).
Imperatives
Use imperatives to give instructions and directions.
like / love / hate + -ing
Say what you like, love and hate doing using the -ing form.
much / many / a lot of
Use much, many and a lot of to talk about quantity.
Object pronouns (me, you, him, her, it, us, them)
Use object pronouns after a verb or a preposition.
Plural nouns (regular and common irregulars)
Form regular plural nouns and recognise common irregular plurals.
Possessive 's
Use 's with a person or name to show possession.
Possessive adjectives (my/your/his/her)
Use the possessive adjectives my, your, his, her before a noun to say who something belongs to.

Use prepositions of place and movement to say where places are and how to move.

Prepositions of time: at / on / in
Use at, on and in to say when something happens.
Present simple - the full picture
Use the present simple accurately in affirmative, negative and question forms, with adverbs of frequency, to talk about routines and facts.

Use the present simple to talk about habits and routines, adding -s for he/she/it.
Present simple: negatives and questions
Form present simple negatives and questions with do and does.
Question words (Wh- questions)
Ask for information with what, where, when, who, why and how.
Questions for directions
Ask for directions and places with fixed question patterns.

Use some in positive sentences and any in questions and negatives.
Subject pronouns (I, you, he, she)
Use the subject pronouns I, you, he, she (and recognise it, we, they) as the subject of a sentence.
Talking about likes, ability and quantity
Talk about likes, abilities and quantities using like/love/hate + -ing, can/can't, some/any and countable/uncountable nouns.

Use there is and there are to say what exists in a place.
this/that, these/those
Use this/that and these/those to point to people and things near or far.
to be (affirmative, negative, questions, short answers)
Use the verb be in the present - affirmative, negative, questions and short answers - to give and ask for personal information.
would like (I'd like)
Use would like to ask for and offer things politely.
